What wisdom tooth removal involves

A wisdom tooth that cannot fully erupt is called impacted — it presses on the tooth in front, traps food and causes repeated infection. Removal is a minor surgical procedure done under local anaesthesia in the clinic.

How the treatment goes

  1. X-ray planningWe map the tooth position and its relation to the nerve before surgery.
  2. Local anaesthesiaThe whole quadrant is numbed thoroughly.
  3. Surgical removalThe tooth is sectioned if needed and removed with minimal bone contact.
  4. Sutures and reviewStitches are placed where required and reviewed after a week.

  • No rinsing, spitting or finger contact with the socket for two days.
  • Avoid hot and spicy food for two days; no smoking or alcohol.
  • Use ice water in the mouth if bleeding continues — do not rinse.

Questions

Wisdom Tooth Removal — your questions answered

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come through straight, bites properly and can be cleaned is left alone. We remove them when they are impacted, decayed, or causing repeated infection.
How long is the recovery?
Swelling peaks around day two and settles by day four or five. Most patients take one or two days off. Stitches, if used, come out after a week.
Is impacted wisdom tooth removal risky?
It is a routine procedure, but the lower wisdom tooth roots can sit close to a nerve, which is exactly why we take an X-ray and plan the approach before starting. We explain any specific risk in your case beforehand.
Can I eat after wisdom tooth surgery?
Yes — cool, soft food from a few hours afterwards. Avoid hot, spicy and hard food for two days and chew on the opposite side.
